Teepee Junction – These concrete teepees stand at the junction of Highways 24-40 and and 59 just north of Lawrence, KS. Built in 1928 by Frank McDonald who served as coach and athletic director at Haskell Indian Nations University in the early 1900’s, the structure originally served as a service station and the office for a campground.
Today the location is known as a party spot for University of Kansas students. The base of the structure was under water during floods in 1935 amd 1951. Lines painted on the side of the building indicating high water marks are visible in the picture.
